My artwork here is based in part on the engines of the 1919 Ford Model T and the 1937 Ford Pickup Truck. Man, and I don't even like Ford vehicles. So, why? Here's why: Why a 1937 Ford Pickup? 1937 is the year Henry Ford's private security forces tried to bust up the UAW and attacked workers at the "Battle of the Overpass." UAW members that were attacked included Walter Reuther who was picked up and slammed on the concrete at least seven times. The Detroit News described how police stood by as people were beaten: "A lone police officer, appalled at the scene, pleaded with the 'service' men to stop beating one woman: 'You'll kill her...' The Dearborn police did nothing else. They stood by and said the Ford men were protecting their private property." The brutal attack helped turn public opinion against the way Ford treated working people. Why a 1919 Ford Model T? 1919 is the year Henry Ford bought "The Dearborn Independent" newspaper, which he used for about a decade to publish Nazi-inspiring Anti-Semitic articles like "The Scope of Jewish Dictatorship in the U.S.," "The Jewish Element in Bootlegging Evil," "Jewish Degradation of American Baseball," and "Jewish Jazz Becomes Our National Music." This lead to Henry Ford being the only American mentioned in Adolf Hitler's book "Mein Kampf," where Hitler wrote: "Every year makes them [American Jews] more and more the controlling masters ... [In the U.S.] only a single great man, Ford, to their fury still maintains full independence." At the Nuremberg trial for war crimes, one Nazi leader stated how Ford's writings inspired them: "I read it and became anti-Semitic. [It] made such a deep impression on my friends and myself because we saw in Henry Ford the representative of success ..." Prior to these five executed witches, six others had already been executed; all six were women. The five executed on this date were one woman (Martha Carrier) and four men (George Burroughs, George Jacobs Sr., John Proctor, and John Willard). John Willard was a law enforcement officer who brought many of the other accused to court. George Burroughs was a minister, who recited the Lord's Prayer while standing at the gallows waiting to die. John Proctor's wife Elizabeth was also among the accused. What do you do when law enforcement, ministers, and husbands of accused witches dare question the court system? Accuse them of being warlocks, and execute them, too. 2) "Lock" as in "Locked Away." Most of the focus of Salem Witch Trial history is on the 19 people who were executed by hanging, and one tortured to death. Sources say about 150 other accused witches were locked away in jail. The youngest, four-year-old Dorcas Good, was jailed for almost nine months, from March 24, 1692, to Dec. 10, 1692. At least four of the accused (Sarah Osbourn, Roger Toothaker, Ann Foster, and Lydia Dustin) died in prison. 3) "Lock" as in "Lock her up!" According to folklore and urban legend, the Nain Rouge is a supernatural shape-shifting native being who was brutally attacked by xenophobic colonists and has since been seen dancing as an omen of successful rebellions by the oppressed, having reportedly been seen before events such as the victory of Chief Pontiac at the Battle of Bloody Run in 1763 and the 1967 Detroit Rebellion against racism and police brutality. Besides short stature and redness, the Nain Rouge is known for dance, metamorphosis, and cross-species collaboration, having according to “Myths and Legends of Our Own Land” (1896) “directed the dance of black cats” and “had power to change shape.” The video, soundtrack, and voiceover are all created with custom artificial intelligence systems, programmed and trained on a hacked-up second-hand MacBook laptop to minimize environmental destruction and maximize class warfare. The video is based on an AI trained on Victorian era public domain photos of spiritualists and factory workers (including the Ford Motor Company River Rouge factory), early 20th century dance, science fiction, and horror film stills, as well as microscopic images of red blood cells and telescopic images of red dwarf stars. The soundtrack is created in part from an AI trained on stethoscopic recordings of human, carnivorous plant, and fungus organs, and also radio waves from space. As part of this project, I have created an AI trained on Nobel Peace laureates and robots from top-grossing and most critically acclaimed science fiction films, as well as on microscopic symbiotic biological organisms and the root systems of carnivorous plants. I have also created another AI to write cut-up incantation poetry based on the text of the United Nations’ “Universal Declaration of Human Rights” and Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus.”Each poem starts with Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, “All human beings are born free …” and ends with last line of Frankenstein, “… borne away by the waves and lost in darkness and distance,” and then my AI, trained on those texts, writes the poetry in between. While this robot makes its way through the documents, it laser projects an animated looping video created by an AI trained on the handwriting of the texts themselves, as well as common themes — birds and clockwork — found by a poetic programmatic data analysis of these two types of court papers. This project uses computer vision, facial recognition, and machine learning to explore different ways humans might see and learn from other species. The robotic rover uses artificial intelligence and machine vision to move about the space, its movements based on its readings of two types of court documents from human beings in the year 1692: Those from the Salem Witch Trials court proceedings, and those from English playwright Ben Jonson’s Third Folio of performances for the lords and ladies of English royal court. While this robot makes its way through the documents, it laser projects an animated looping video created by an AI trained on the handwriting of the texts themselves, as well as common themes — birds and clockwork — found by a poetic programmatic data analysis of these two types of court papers. According to folklore and urban legend, the Nain Rouge is a supernatural shape-shifting native being who was brutally attacked by xenophobic colonists and has since been seen dancing as an omen of successful rebellions by the oppressed, having reportedly been seen before events such as the victory of Chief Pontiac at the Battle of Bloody Run in 1763 and the 1967 Detroit Rebellion against racism and police brutality. Besides short stature and redness, the Nain Rouge is known for dance, metamorphosis, and cross-species collaboration, having according to “Myths and Legends of Our Own Land” (1896) “directed the dance of black cats” and “had power to change shape.” The video, soundtrack, and voiceover are all created with custom artificial intelligence systems, programmed and trained on a hacked-up second-hand MacBook laptop to minimize environmental destruction and maximize class warfare. The video is based on an AI trained on Victorian era public domain photos of spiritualists and factory workers (including the Ford Motor Company River Rouge factory), early 20th century dance, science fiction, and horror film stills, as well as microscopic images of red blood cells and telescopic images of red dwarf stars. The soundtrack is created in part from an AI trained on stethoscopic recordings of human, carnivorous plant, and fungus organs, and also radio waves from space.
